Sending files, video, audio - problems

B

Bruce2002

I am NOT new to Windows Messenger, but am stumped by
recent events. I used to be able to send files, do voice
chat and even video chat behind my Linksys BEFSR41 router
with UPnP enabled of course.

Now I have upgraded to a wireless BEFW11S4 router and
matched the settings of my old router. My computer is
still hard-wired, but one computer on my home network is
wireless and we use WEP encryption for that one only.

The message that always appears when sending files is
that the other person has a blocked connection. These
people usually have an identical setup to my own but
usually without the router. Some of them have ICF on,
others off. I know their configurations because I am the
one that usually installs their software, and I can
verify this because I almost never have a problem using
Remote Assistance with these same people.

To summarize, I can still do Remote Assistance and type-
chat, but sharing files, voice and video does not work. I
can hear another person speaking through a microphone,
but cannot send video, voice, or files. Again, UPnP is
enabled. What do you think is up?

Thanks

Hi Bruce

These are the setting I use with my linksys BEFW11S4 router i do not use a
firewall
other than the router you must have latest firmware,
you must have UPnP Enable on the router to get the Internet Gateway to
appear in view network connections
And the router to appear in My Network Places
UPnP Enable/Disable radio button in on the password tab in the router
setting,

I have found that with lisksys routers is that you must a have universal
plug and play installed as well internet gateway device discovery and
control client, go to control panel, add or remove programs, windows
components, networking services, click on details and install
if they are already installed in control panel go to, administrative tools,
services, and look for universal plug and play device, and see if it started
if it is set to start automatic change to manual right click on it go
properties startup type and from drop down box select manual and do the same
for SSDP Discovery service you may have to reboot after reboot you should
see your router in my network places and in view network connections you
will see internet gateway if this fails to work try uninstalling and
reinstalling universal plug and play and internet gateway device discovery
also if you right click on the Internet Gateway and go to propertis,
settings, and delete all the memsgs settings

Posr back and let me know how you get on

I did everything you said, and after rebooting, I was
able to get the file sending to work correctly.

I am still having no luck with doing a voice and/or video
conference. I am trying everything imaginable and I won't
give up until it all works correctly.

You were right about the UPnP services thing not being
set up. I had it enabled in the router but not on the PC.
I also see the Router in My Network Places, and deleted
the msmsgs entries in the connection properties.

Any new ideas why the file transfer stuff works but not
the voice and video? Thank you.

Hi Bruce

If you do the audio/video tuning wizard in messenger is everything ok ?
all so are you running a firewall if so disable it for testing
you mite try disabling QoS packet Scheduler under Local area connection
properties

I had already done the audio/video tuning wizard a
million times. Since I'm running behind a router, like
you, I'm not running any additional firewalls. I don't
even see an option to run the XP ICF while behind the
router.

I researched disabling the QoS Packet Scheduler and
wanted to find out what it was all about before doing
that. I am also running an IPSec VPN connection
simultaneously, and wasn't sure of the effect of QoS and
that. I read further and found an article stating that it
would mess up Messenger when disabling it, and finally I
found an elaborate procedure for disabling it that
required changing all sorts of other settings first.

Instead, I decided to just uncheck it in Local Area
Connection properties (the network bridge actually) like
you said and it immediately disconnected my VPN
connection, but I was able to restore it. I then rebooted
with QoS disabled and tried to do a video conference. It
worked great. Thank you! It is people like you that save
the day :)

I my self have QoS enable on my computer and it works, however I do not use
VPN
I do have some ports forwarded for remote desktop
