On our old computer email was accessed using Outlook Express. Messages were
sent and received almost instantaneously, even with Norton Internet Security
and outbound email scanning.
On our new computer running Windows Vista Home Premium and using Windows
Mail there is significant delay between clicking send and a message leaving
the outbox and between the time a message is sent from another email account
(like gmail) and the time it shows up in inbox. When you click the
send/receive button on the tool bar it shows that it is connected to the
email server but it takes so long to send/receive that it times out and asks
if you want to wait another 60 sec. This cycle is repeated several times
before things are sent or received. Should it take this long to send/receive
messages with Mail?
The new computer has McAfee Security Center with outbound scanning turned
off. The new computer also has Office 2003 (student/teacher ed.) and
downloaded Office 2003 service pack. Cox technical support is there usual
unhelpful-selves suggesting that it must be a problem with Microsoft or
McAfee. Could the McAfee or the Office with the old Outlook or the service
pack 3 be causing the problem?
I’ve noticed that on the Tools, Options, General tab under Send/Receive
Messages you can set how frequently Mail will check for messages. The default
setting appeared to be 30 min. so I set it for the lowest it would go, 1 min.
That helped a bit but there is still a delay of one or two or three minutes
or so before a message leaves the email box or is received in the inbox from
an outside email account. I also notice that under the Send tab the send
messages immediately box is checked. Is there some way to set Mail to
send/receive instantly?
Thanks for any help you can offer.
PS. In checking Outlook Express on old computer I see that its Tools,
Options tabs are virtually identical to Mail and that it was set to send
immediately and check for messages every 30 min. What do these settings mean?
