I have just set up a new email address and am using Windows Mail for the
first time. My email account is set up fine and works in webmail but when I
try to use it in Windows Mail it will send and receive my mail when I open it
for the first time, but after that if I click on send and receive nothing
happens - not even an error message. I know I am missing something really
obvious! Please help.

I'm also having a problem with the send. Click send and it transfers it into
my outbox then waits until I close and re-open before sending. Is this where
yours goes?

Yes that's what happens. And when I try and send myself a test email from
another address it doesn't come in until I close and re-open.

It may be an option setting.

Please check Tools > Options > Send

ensure "Send Messages Immediately" is ticked.

You may wish to tick "Save copy of sent messages to 'Sent Items' folder."

Please report back if this helps (or not) since it may
be beneficial to other users now and in future.

The only obvious thing tou're missing is that Windows mail just doesnt work
properly - God knows why. If you have (as I do) plenty of more interesting
things to do , install Mozilla Thunderbird and think about something else
while Microsoft fixes the bug.

Thanks for confirming my worst fears. I have had nothing but problems with
this since I got it. I'll take your advice!

Thanks Julian but I already tried that and I do have the send immediately box
ticked. It just doesn't work.

Take the opportunity to abandon Windows Mail, it's virtually redundant,
and try it's replacement instead...

Also, if you are running Norton or McAfee antivirus uninstall them,
they're not Vista compatible, and replace them with either of
these two free alternatives.
Avast http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html
AVG http://free.grisoft.com/doc/download-free-anti-virus/us/frt/0

note. disable email virus scanning, it is not needed.
