Sempron 3200 - Righteous or wimpy upgrade?

I'm currently running a 1.2ghz athlon and am thinking about
a new cpu and mobo. The Sempron 3200+ is affordable, but
will I get that "doors blown off wind through my hair"
feeling for a while afterward or will I just want to take a
nap? Maybe it's time to move up to the 3ghz P4?

It depends on what you use it for, but at a guess I'd say you will notice
the difference. For some things the Sempron will beat that P4.

Since the CPU is not the only bottleneck in the system,
you should maybe look instead for some mood-altering drugs
to induce the feeling you crave. Maybe Prozac does the trick?

Good one, Arno, but I'm pretty confident that at the moment my cpu is the
bottleneck. I've used a few 3ghz P4's where I work and they have the kind
of performance I want. Unfortunately, I don't know anyone using a Sempron
3X00+ system that I could test drive so I'm asking all of you. And by the
way, I've been told that Prozac doesn't make you think things are different,
it simply helps you not to care <g>.

O.k., so Prosac would not have helped but you would not have cared ;-)=)

On the performance side, I think AMD still gives you more a bit more
speed for a little less money. Personally I have not been impressed
with Intels cost/performance ratio for quite some time now, with the
notable exception of the Pentium M for notebooks.

I am honestly not sure about the Sempron. Seems to be a Celeron
lookalike made from Athlon 64s and Athlon XPs that have some
defects in their cache and/or 64 bit execution unit. I would
be careful with that CPU-family performance-wise.

I think it is time. Intel Pentium 4 530, 3.0 GHz, LGA775
seems to be not much more expensive and it works great.

BTW, did you mean Sempron 3300+ ?

Actually, I did mean the 3200+ because it costs $106 at the
moment (pricewatch.com). The 3300+ costs $140 and since a
P4 2.8ghz costs $143 I would probably go with the P4.

There is no AMD Sempron 3200+.
Pricewatch has made a typo (detail shows it is a 3000+).

Thanks for the heads-up. Pricewatch also lists a 3100+. Is that also
incorrect?

You can get an Athlon 64 3000+ for that money.
