I'm running a Semperon 2800 with an Athlon 2800 heat sink, is there a
big risk of damaging the processor?

The Athlon heat sink overlaps at the edges, but the base looks as though
it's the right size for the job. Something however is definitely amiss
as my temperature is around 57C/134F with the case off.

I've reapplied the thermal grease, however am doing this again - fear a
little think first go - even after really thinning the stuff out.

The FSB is running at 166Mhz with 400Mhz RAM (so running at 333Mhz) and
my power temperature is up at 47C. Do Semperons run hotter than
Athlons? Could this be a fan issue on CPU, or is it simply the wrong
dimensions of heat sink that aren't providing a smooth connection?

Cheers again,

Duncan

Not enough info and my crystal ball needs reformatting. Sempron has a giant
of a cooler and fan. Your "Athlon 2800" cooler can be either an Athlon 64 or
an Athlon XP. I can't see how you would clip a smaller Athlon XP cooler
onto the ZIF socket. Where is the original Sempron cooler?

The heatsink currently on is an Athlon XP 2800 heatsink (looks similar
to a Semperon heatsink but is 1 cm wider on each side ).

It clips to the socket fine, makes snug contact with the top of the CPU
and doesn't overlap onto the plastic moulding of the ZIF socket. Since
cleaning and re-attaching the temperature has dropped from 57C to around
52C - but from what I understand, this is still high.

Posts from other users report similar temperatures, so this isn't
unusual. Suspect the only way to improve this might be some better
paste, heatsink, and fans. Newsgroup results suggest this may only
product a 7C - 10C drop in temperature. Is it likely to be better than
this? Are these are all crystal ball questions?

Cheers,

Duncan

(The original Semperon cooler is securely at the warehouse from which it
was never ordered - as the author - in a fit of adventurousness /
stupidity - ordered the wrong one.)

I have a new spare backup computer I threw together the other day.
Sempron 2800 (Venice) in a K8S-MX board.
Ambient temp= 27c.
Mobo temp=36c.
CPU temp=37c.
HDD temp= 33c.
This is with the comp sitting idle with a screensaver on. My CPU was the
boxed version and the cooler for that CPU is a big sucker which barely fits
inside the plastic frame.
I would have to think that you are going to have to bite the bullet and get
the correct cooler for that CPU. Don't forget that if you don't have the
approved cooler you have no warranty on the CPU.
