True, this is a *help* forum for those with printing problems (usually a
mucked-up install)...what I would like to hear from is those like me who
have that ultimate in painlessness: a self-installing (AKA "Plug and Print")
printer. (You connect the printer, and Windows XP finds, installs drivers
for, and sets up the printer without doing anything more than flashing
messages at you.)

In my case, it's the HP Deskjet 694C USB color inkjet printer. I simply
connect it to an open USB port on my PC, and Windows XP handles the rest. I
can have the printer connected while *installing* Windows, and it will
automagically find and set it up.

One of the absolute *smoothest* installs I've never had to do.

Fine and good if it's a discontinued printer which does not have updated
drivers from the manufacturer's website.

The thing is...it *does* have updated drivers available from HP.

The point I am trying to make is that I've never needed them!

I didn't even need the original drivers that came with the printer!

(And yes...the printer is *newer* than Windows XP Professional itself.)

The printer *has* since been discontinued.

(By the by, the printer installs just as easily in that OS that has a
penguin as a mascot.)
