Selective Startup By Profile or User?

In order to test/maximize hard drive write/read, can I
disable the network card and not load antivirus and other
software - but have my regular setup ready to go by
logging back on as my regular user name? I see how to
disable the network card through a hardware profile, but I
don't see how to handle selective startup through a
similar profile or user setting.

I won't list hardware, as there are a number of other
issues and I'm not sure what is relevant.

Thanks, Stan

Stan,

Services are per-machine setting, while you can disable the applications from startup, or transfer it to the HKCU of your user account, rather than HKLM RUN key.

Thanks to you both. MSConfig is an option - I would have
a second "profile" as the "selective startup," as long as
I didn't change it.

Ramesh, can you provide a link regarding the "transfer it
to HKCU"? Are you saying that the only services options
are per machine, and that applications may be handled in
more than one way (e.g. transferring a setting to a user
registry setting?

The entries in this location (the current user profile) is invoked when you login to that profile. Other profiles are not affected.
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run]

This affects all the profiles. The entries execute whenever any user logs in.
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run]

If you want to transfer some startup entries to HKCU, export this key and save it to a REG file:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run]
(Maintain two copies of this REG file. Open one copy of the REG file replace all words containing "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE" to "HKEY_CURRENT_USER". Now, delete the invalid/unwanted entries and save the file again.)

Then, go back to HKLM and delete the common RUN entries (which you don't need.)
