Selective Page Cannot Be Displayed.

Mike Klick

I have a machine where only a few PAGES in a few particular sites will not
display. I know it is not the site, nor the ISP.

(The ISP's engineer's thought maybe it was their router because tracert will
show Destination Unreachable. But after testing found out it was not.)

How do I troubleshoot this? Have attacked spyware and adware and Trojans and
Viruses. Machine had a bunch. Flushed IE cache, DNS resolver.

What else?

Hi Mike :-)

Try the following and see if it helps:

Download, install and run LSPFIX from any of the following sites:
http://www.cexx.org/lspfix.htm
http://www.spychecker.com/program/winsockxpfix.html
(if your OS is Win2k or XP) The process of removing certain malware may kill
your internet connection. If this should occur, this program, LSPFIX, will
enable you to regain your connection.

Also, download, install and run WINSOCKXPFIX available at:
http://www.spychecker.com/program/winsockxpfix.html
and
WinsockXP Fix- WinXP
http://www.spychecker.com/program/winsockxpfix.html
Also, with instructions, at
http://www.iup.edu/house/resnet/winfix.shtm
also
From LavaSoft- all versions of Windows-
http://digital-solutions.co.uk/lavasoft/whndnfix.zip
also ....
(NOTE: It is reported that in XP SP2, the command netsh winsock reset
will fix this problem without the need for these programs.)

or ........

If these steps do not resolve your problem, please post back to this thread
with the details and any error messages.

Hope this helps

Jan:

I will try and let you know.

The machine in question, however, does have Internet access. It is just
selective pages that will not display. Does that makes a difference? Still
use the utilities below?

They have access via Cable Internet. Most pages display fine. Except
important ones they go to a lot.

Hi Mike :-)

You might also try the following first and see if it will help:

Run the following commands from Start/Run. Run each line individually. After
each run, you should see a short message stating the command was successful.
The first command is the one most likely to work.

regsvr32 Urlmon.dll

regsvr32 Shdocvw.dll

regsvr32 Shell32.dll (only applicable to Windows ME, Windows 2000 and XP -
if using an earlier operating system, run regsvr32 shdoc401.dll)

regsvr32 Oleaut32.dll
regsvr32 Actxprxy.dll
regsvr32 Mshtml.dll

Another thing you can try is:

Type in: regsvr32 softpub.dll
Press Enter or click OK

Check C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\etc for a file named HOSTS with no
extension. (Not Hosts.sam)
Make sure Windows is set to show hidden files and folders and is NOT set to

HOSTS.OLD
Reboot an try again.

Or, In a Cmd window, enter
ipconfig /flushdns
and re-boot.

Check for a file named HOSTS with no extension (not Hosts.sam). It may be a
hidden file. Open it with Notepad and remove any line referencing the site.
Or, rename HOSTS to OLDHOSTS

Guys:

I have flushed the browser cache. Ipconfig /flushdns. Renamed the HOSTS
file. (This machine did have the MVPS.ORG host files earlier but I removed
it before the problem.) netsh winsock reset, also used the command that
resets the IP stack. Did regsvr32 Urlmon.dll, regsvr32 Shdocvw.dll.

I created dialer connection. It worked fine. Was able to surf with no
problem, including sites not accessible.

It is clearly with the machine. I think next I am going to replace the NIC
with a different one.

Discover probable issue:

This machine I was working on was upgraded from 98 to XP without a BIOS
upgrade. It was generating ACPI errors in the event viewer. (It also had a
bad chip set cooler fan.)

I removed its NIC and replaced it with a standard 3com that I know works.
The machine would install the drivers but never give me connectivity.

The machine is unstable. I believe it is contributing to its Internet
Explorer problem. The 3com card behaved very strangely.

(I have experienced this before: a machine with the ACPI error and was
considered a problem child. The vendor opted not to upgrade or fix the BIOS.
I retired the machine.)
