Rich

I am wondering if anyone can give me some advice. There
are certain websites I used to be able to access. Now, I
keep getting messages that say..."we can't find" the
page. I know they exist...I have even tried the command
line: "tracert <website address" and these sites keep
stopping at the localhost hop.

This means that my computer is not letting me send out to
that site...what can I do?

Thanx,
Rich

Try the following information and see if it helps.

How to check HOSTS file

Windows/host (it will not have an extension, and if there is more than one,
choose the one that says Application in a column to the right) . Right click
on it and select Open with.....when the window opens, scroll down the list
to Notepad. Once it opens in Notepad, scoll down the list to see if that
site is in the list. If so, DO NOT delete it, just go to the very front of
the line to the left and enter # in front of the line so that it looks
similar to the one below, as the entries with # in front will be ignored.

# Entries with other comments are searchable via Google.

Then click the save button and close. Then try the site again.

For more information on the HOSTS file check here

If this does not help then it is possible that you have parasites, spyware,
adware, malware, or hijackware on your system causing the problem, which
your antivirus will not detect, as it does not have the same definitions.

(Unexplained computer behavior may be caused by deceptive software

Download and install, then you *MUST* update the programs prior to running
to be sure they have the latest definitions, then run the programs below.
They are free and very effective. Be sure to run both SpyBot and Adaware,
as what one does not detect the other may. It is important that you do all
the steps and follow all directions carefully:

IMPORTANT:
Before trying to remove spyware using the programs below, download a copy of
LSPFIX from the URL below - some malware may kill your internet connection
when it is removed, this program will enable you to regain your connection.

It is important that you run the programs in the order that they are listed
here. The first three programs will clear your machine of all other items so
that you can have a clear HiJackThis Log for the experts to read and analyze
for you.

When the scan is finished, the "Scan" button will change into a "Save Log"

Most of what it lists will be harmless or even required, so DO NOT fix

Jan,

Thanks so much..it worked like a charm. Actually, I new
that something was blocking the web adress, but was
unsure how and where to find it. Buth with your help,
I "fixed" it.

One last question...because I am a techie, is there a way
to start the list over instead of using the one that has
already been created. I am finding quite a few site that
were blocked, and instead of resetting the "switch" for
every site, is there a way to change the list or
something?! Thanks again for your help.

How to clear Address Bar History

See here
http://www.xmission.com/~comphope/issues/ch000511.htm

See this section: Instructions for Internet Explorer users
http://www.help2go.com/article58.html

or ............

First thing is when you "clear history", you need to close all your browser
windows that are opened. Otherwise it retains the autocomplete for web
address until you do so. Then reopen Internet Explorer and you should find
that it no longer performs the autocomplete.

To prevent it from happening, go to Tools|Internet Options and click the
Content tab. Click the button that says Autocomplete. Uncheck Web Addresses
and anything else that you don't want to use autocomplete for. You may want
to clear your "forms" and "passwords" if you feel it's necessary. Just a
word of advice, make sure you know what your passwords are before you clear
that one.

How to clear Address Bar History

Free History Eraser from
http://smartprotector.com/eraser/free-history-eraser.htm
Deletes the History folder (and the index.dat file). When you reboot, a new
folder is created

Delete History folder manually:
http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/delcache.htm

In order to prevent the Autocomplete from working, close all open browser
windows or it will not take effect. Go to Tools | Internet Options | Click
the Content tab. Click the button that says Autocomplete. Uncheck Web
Addresses and all other items you don't want used with Autocomplete.
CAUTION: Be careful clearing passwords, be sure you have them backedup

-----Clear History for Windows XP

Courtesy of LuckyStrike:

Do a Deltree command in DOS:
http://inetexplorer.mvps.org/answers_8.htm#deltree

http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/delcache.htm

Follow the instructions to the letter. You will be left with new Index.dat
file of 32 KB, and a newly created History folder. The same will apply if
you go the distance and do a Deltree on TIF and Cookie folders. It is
unnecessary to do that if they are in good working order.

Hope this helps.
