selecting sentence in word turns all to bold

When selecting a selecting sentence in word 2002and making it bold it turns all turns all to bold. Clicking undo once changes all but selected text to normal, but when I have a large document this takes alot of time and. What is making word think that I want all bold? When I just what what I selected to be bold?

Hi Gary,

Menu Format > Styles...;
Spot the style you are using (Probably "Normal");
Right-click on it;
Select modify;
In the dialog that pops up, uncheck "Automatically update";
Click OK;
Close the Style pane.
