Please help, When starting excel, I click on a cell and
get the cross pointer but when I move the mouse to put a
formula or data into that cell all cells are selected in
the direction of mouse movement. I am unable to de-select
the cells and the only thing I can do is close excel from
the task bar. I have come across this problem once before
But cannot remember how to solve it. Thanks in advance for
any help with this issue.
Regards Paul

You sould only get the cross hair if you move the mouse
over the box at the bottom right-hand of the cell. This is
used to enter a fill of a series or formula.

Make sure that the mouse is pointed anywhere in the cell
but the bottom right corner and you should be all right.

Peter

Thankyou for your prompt reply, but unfortunately that
didn't solve it either. F8 & no Ext in the status bar. It
seems that its only happening in excel. As described
earlier, that once I select a cell with the left mouse
thats it I cant do anything else. Not even the Rt mouse
button works and I cant even select a drop down menu. Its
a real pain as being a work computer I have to take it to
town to get re-installed. If you have any other
suggestions I would be very grateful. Regards paul Cottier

This can happen for one of two reasons; one good, one evil.

The good one is that you've just pressed [F8] to toggle on extended
selection. If so you should see the word "Ext" about 3/4 of the way
along your status bar at the bottom of the screen. You can just press
[F8] again to toggle it off.

The evil one is where something funky happens in Windows, and not just
Excel, but every other application performs in the way that you
describe regardless of whether you try moving the cursor with the
mouse or the keyboard. In such cases all you can do is yell a few
profanities, breathe deeply and reboot. Frankly I'm not sure WHAT
causes that, but it ticks me off severely when it happens.
