Selecting cells in Excel

After I have been working in Excel for several minutes, when I click on a
single cell the cursor highlights [selects] 3, 4, 0r 5 cells below it. From
that point I cannot select just one cell. Clicking anywhere on the worksheet
will select multiple cells. My only option is to close Excel and reopen it
until the problem reoccurs.

Also, if Excel has been running for more than 20-30 minutes it will lock-up.

I have run Office Diagnostics with no errors detected.

It kind of sounds like your F8 (extend the selection toggle key) is stuck.

I'd try clicking on that F8 key. You should see EXT in the statusbar (bottom
right corner) when it's toggled on.

If that doesn't help, try gently banging on your mouse buttons -- including the
wheel mouse. Maybe one of them is stuck???

(or even try swapping mouses/mice to see if that helps.)

Thanks for responding. Neither suggestion worked and I don't have another
mouse handy. I have an add-in, Mindjet MindManager. Could an add-in do this?
It's getting worse.

If you disable the addin, does the problem go away?

If it goes away, then I'd say an addin could cause the problem!
