HI,

Have an interesting issue that I've only just recently noticed...

When selecting/highlighting text in any type of editing situation
(i.e., Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Notepad, Internet Explorer, etc.) that
I want to type over or erase to put something else in, when I type in
any key (other than delete) all it does is add the charater to the
beginning of the text I selected instead of deleting it.

I have XP with all the recommeneded Hotfixes and service packs - but
this is defintely one that I cannot figure out for the life of me.

If I hit delete - it deletes the selected text - but that's the only
way. Oh and if I hit Insert - it then begins to delete the text with
what I type starting with the beginning characters.

It's odd.. anyone have a solution to this?

Thanks.

Word/Tools/Options/Edit tab/
****Deletes selected text as soon as you start typing. If you clear this
check box, Word inserts the text you type in front of selected text but does not
delete the selected text.
---------
When this check box is selected, you can move or copy selected text by
dragging it. To move text: Select the text, point to the selection until the
mouse pointer changes to a left-pointing arrow , and then drag the selection to
a new location. To copy selected text: Hold down CTRL while you drag the
selection to where you want to paste it. If you clear this check box, Word
extends the selection when you drag the pointer over text.

Wes,

Thanks for this - I did notice that the box was NOT checked off in
Word.

However my question to the Microsoft individuals is why did that
affect things like Notepad and IE in doing the same thing? Just seems
kind of odd...

Thanks again.

Yes, sounds odd to me also. I don't have a clue about any of the programs
you have mentioned, unless it would be WordPad. As near as I can tell, if you
have Word installed and use WordPad, Word takes over. I believe WordPad creates
files using RTF, TXT and Unicode Text Document. My rtf documents are taken over
by Word.
