Using WIndows Movie Maker, I imported a big MPEG. No problems there, I
can save the whole monstrosity to wmv if I wanted to.
But I want to select a few portions of that video and put them in
smaller WMVs for my webpage.
How can I do that? Version 5.1.

OK, I think I figured it out.
BUT, now there is no way I can have video appear on the screen. Its
amazing... Two monites ago everything was fine, when I'm in the main
screen and I see the time line, I was able to see screen thumbnails,
now I see nothing.
Nothing.
Absolutly nothing. When I play the video from within Movie maker -
nothing.
I hear the sound, but no video. I rebooted, screwed around with every
setting I can find, tried different files, - nothing. no video.
WIndows movie maker might as well be renamed Windows audio maker
because video is for jerks.

===================================
There's a Split button just below the view screen.
Also...typing Ctrl+L will split the video/audio.

Drag the clip to your timeline...split on each side
of the portion you wish to keep...right click/delete
the rest...save the file.

Maybe you need more RAM...2 GB or more
is not a bad idea when working with video.

A system usually performs best when the
hard drive is at least 50% free space.

Disconnecting from the net, and closing
other programs...especially virus scanners
can help. And don't multi-task...even playing
Solitaire can waste the resources you need
for working with video.

Increasing the size of your Virtual Memory
Paging File may help...read the following

One last point...MPEGs are known to be
troublesome when imported into Movie
Maker. You may have to covert the file to
..avi or .wmv before it is manageable.

this is a gaming machine. I have two 750 gig drives in a RAID 1 (Plebs
know it as a mirror)
I also have four gigs of RAM and a 3.2Ghz cpu.
I figure out what is wrong. Since SP2 Movie maker's mpeg support is
broken.
So now I have to sit here and play with myself while I figure out how
I'm suppsoed to do this.
The videos are coming from a home video (not commercial) DVD. So there
is no copy protection and no encryption. Region 0.

OK, I put the video in xvid4 thanks to a linux app named DVD::rip. No
problem.
Now its imported into MovieMaker and I have another issue.
The timeline is compressed. I can see the clips - but there's no way I
can control where the position is. Is there a way to stretch it out so
I can see what I'm doing?

If you have a scroll mouse...hold Ctrl
and Scroll...that should expand your
clips.

Are there any theories as to why M$ broke mpegability in SP2?

Movie Maker has never been compatible with MPEG2. Mainl the reason is to do
with the MPEG2 codec installed on your computer. Most of these codecs are
optimized for playback on the expense of editability. In Vista "M$" are
providing their own MPEG2 codec that is suitable for editing (as well as
playback) so upgrade to Vista when it comes out and enjoy MPEG2 eiting if
that is your priority.

Using WMV format, once I imported the file int the timeline I can no
longer play it.
It says its playing, the pause button is available, but when It says
its playing, the picture doesn't move and there is no sound.
