sees the cdrw but cant read or write

I have a yamaha 8424E was working fine till I bought a new copy of XP pro and
registered it, all the right things but now the manager sees the cdrw but can
not read or write anything including the XP Pro disc. How random is this. Do
I have to update the firmware ? Hope you can help, Regards Wills.
 
open my computer and right click on the cd drive, choose properties. click
on recording and make sure "enable CD recording" is checked. next, click on
the autoplay tab and set it to your liking.
if it still doesn't work, right click on my computer and choose device
manager. find the cd drive and delete it and restart. when you restart,
windows will find the drive and install it again automatically.

I have tried everything you sujested but I think the yamaha has died and I
have to find a new one that reads and writes CD+G for my work .... any
sujestions ?
