Hi
I have an emachines 370 that has stopped working. When I turn the power on
at the wall the light around the on/off button flickers constantly but the
computer will not start up at all. I have the side of and the CPU fan is
spinning and I have changed the Power Unit so this is OK. Can someone tell
me what the problem is please and what do I need to sort it. Where is the
best place in UK to buy the bits for these machines?
Thanks for any help.
Lenny

With pwr disconnected you could try ensuring all components/cables are
firmly seated, but with no bios beeps sound like no pwr is being supplied to
mobo or mobo is dead.
I dont know specifically about emachines but providing it uses std
components, ie not specially made for them, most any generic hw can be
fitted.
However if you cannot specifically identify the problem you might be advised
to take it to a shop.

No beep is not a good sign.. motherboards can just give up without
provocation.. they also give up if you remove internal cards and parts while
the machine is powered up or if there is a power surge..

You can test your power supply with one of these..
http://www.pctestpro.com/psu test/psu.htm .. that will determine if your
supply is ok.. or you could try the power supply in another computer.. if it
tests ok, your motherboard is dead..

Replacing a motherboard and CPU is not difficult for the most part.. one
just has to work carefully and precisely.. after replacement, unless the
motherboard is almost identical to the dead one (unlikely in the case of an
Emachine), you will have to do a repair install of your OS.. refer to this
website.. http://www.michaelstevenstech.com..

Remember that, when doing any work inside a computer, if you have to force
something to fit, you are probably fitting it wrong.. replacing a
motherboard with an upgraded type, ie bigger processor, video card etc, will
also probably require a larger capacity power supply..

Doing it yourself will work out cheaper, and you will learn more about the
workings than if you take it someplace to get it fixed..

Great advice. Thanks. There is nothing wrong with the power supply as I have
tried a new one and it is the same. I have noticed that if I add the power
connector and the 4pin supply to the board then the fan and the cpu fan both
spin all the time that power cable is plugged in but I don't think they are
spining at full speed. If i take the 4 pin out then neither spins so it
looks like the power seems to be going straight through the MB on/off switch
but not complete power.
Any other thoughts?
Cheers
