No, WordPerfect has gone through many ownership changes. Originally
published by the WordPerfect Corporation, it was later bought by (if memory
serves) IBM, Novell, and, most recently, Corel. Word 2002 will open WP 5.x
and 6.x formats (that is, both DOS and Windows versions), which should cover
most WP docs. If Word cannot open your WP doc, and you still have WP
installed, try saving in (a) the latest Word format offered (Word 2002 can
open versions at least back to 6.0) or (b) RTF (Rich Text Format), which
can be opened by any word processing program.
Correct as to ownership, except delete IBM. And Corel was recently
acquired by a privately held investment company. I should add that the
last version with the Novell label on it was 7.0. Version 7.0 came out
originally by Novell, then Novell sold it to Corel and Corel changed
the package to say "Corel WP 7.0." All later versions were under the
Corel label.
As for import filters, my Word 2000 has no problem importing
WordPerfect files from version 5.0 through 9.0. I don't know about
later versions, but I do have WPD files in all those versions and Word
opens them all without complaint. I note in the File > Open dialog box
when you look in the "files of type" listbox it lists only versions 5
and 6. Nevertheless, it opens the others just fine.
My understanding is that WordPerfect (more or less like Word) uses the
same file format for all versions, but if a file is opened in an older
version, features in the document that are exclusive to the new
version won't make the transition. Therefore, it wouldn't surprise me
if Word could open even the latest version files. Then again, I
stopped upgrading Word at 2000, so perhaps the import filters for
later versions are more restrictive. Of course, if the OP has no other
choice, he could always use Word's "open it anyway and do the best you
can" feature.
