seeking portable printer recommendation

As I am increasingly working away from home I could do with a smallish
printer to use with my laptop in hotel rooms etc. Typically to print
out say 10 * 5 sheet meeting handouts or whatever in mostly B&W with
spot colour. No need for high speed, mega photo quality or really high
volume, but small enough not to be a bother and ideally economical to
run and readily available. Mains powered - I've no need to use it in a
tent!

The Canon 1600 looks OK but ink seems very expensive.

All suggestions welcome.

You might take a look at the DeskJet 460c, see

see http://www.hp.com/pageyield/us/en/DJ460/index.html for page yield
information. [Note - in the UK the cartridge numbers will be different, but
the yields the same.]

Did it ever occur to anyone why a retired HP employee never recommends
other brands other than HP like Canon or Epson?

I honestly though that I might get a few useful suggestions from those
with good knowledge or personal experience of similar situations. We
all have our preferences and reasons for them, but the reader can make
up their own mind based on what they read here.

Sadly, it looks like after only one on topic reply this thread has
degenerated into a fairly pointless exchange of sarcasm and insult with
no added value from the subsequent posters. A high number of topics on
this newsgroup seem to go the same way.

Frank - I'm not even sure if you are being rude to me or to measkite, if
you want to trade insults with each other can you at least decide
between you if you are to top post or bottom post or address your
comments to someone by name. I don't care which. If you are being rude
to me, I do have a life which I enhance by being as productive as I can
whilst working away from home to maximise the time I have for other
things. My desire to be able to print when travelling does not allow
you to infer that I do not have a life.

So, thanks to Bob for an on topic suggestion, and exercising my own
little bit of sarcasm, thanks Frank and measekite for killing off the
usefulness of this thread.

The unsubscribe button awaits.

I saw the other leg of this thread and share your disdain.
You can be assured that anything you hear from Bob Headrick is balanced and has
been carefully thought out.
For my part, I am only aware of two manufacturers who make decent portable
inkjets, that is HP and Canon. I have some experience with older models from
both manufacturers and have to say there is little to choose. Overall I think I
would lean towards HP because they are more easily serviced and the newer ones
seem (based on what I have seen) to use integral printheads so you get a new
printhead with each cartridge. This to me seems to make a lot of sense with a
portable which is never going to be a volume printer.
Good luck with your search.

I know that Canon made a number of inkjet printers both color and B&W
which were designed for travel specifically. I don't know if they are
still made. I think some even worked on rechargeable batteries.

Art & RCC-

I had the old Apple Color StyleWriter 2200, which was first cousin to
the Canon BJC-70. I also had a newer BJC-85. These all work with the
Canon NK-300 NiCd battery adapter, which charged from the printer's
power supply.

These printers and the smaller BJC-50, all use the same sets of
cartridges. Unfortunately the cartridge ink tanks hold only a small
amount of ink, and prints fade very rapidly in sunlight.

I don't know if the BJC-85 is still available. I replaced mine with an
HP Deskjet 450 with the optional battery pack and Bluetooth adapter. It
is a nice printer but don't let the prints get wet!

I understand HP as since updated the 450 to the Deskjet 460.

Hi Fred,

Thank you for your knowledgeable reply, as your real world experience
will certainly be helpful to the OP.

I take a printer with me t o events so that I can print out proof
sheets and some projects. I considered a portable printer, but they
used smaller ink tanks that I would have to fill more often.

I decided to just take a regular printer with me. I have one crate
designated for my scanne, printer, and associated cables. I keep a
spare set of ink tanks in my supply box. It has worked great for me.
It does take up a little more space, but not that much, and it works
well for me. I don't have to worry about getting different results
from it since I use the same kind of printer at home.
