Seeking layout manager

I'm not sure if such a thing exists, but ... is there anything free to
arrange applications on the desktop? ... the idea being that
applications don't overlap one another, but tile themselves nicely.

investigate linux and xwindows. Many of their xwindow managers handle
this.

Apologies if I've got the wrong end of the stick ...
Is this Windows?
Right-click anywhere on Desktop > Arrange Icons > Auto Arrange.
