I want to discover how to make my new IP phone work with my ICS-enabled home network (a WXP and a W98 machine) which accesses the Net via an ADSL modem.
The phone manufacturer's configuration instructions appear to be useful ONLY after I've successfully added an additional NIC to the network, which I have now done, inserting the NIC in the WXP machine. However, the NIC shows up in the icon tray with a red "EX" through it. The phone is meant to be connected by ethernet cable to this NIC and thus to my network
Can anyone point me to some helpful literature or website which will allow me to learn how to get my additional NIC and network to recognise that there is now an IP phone plugged into it
Specifically, I do not even know what a NAT is or if my network uses/has one; whether my network uses DHCP or not; which machine I should put the IP phone's NIC into; whether I am supposed to create a "bridge" or "VPN" to allow additional IP addresses into the Network; whether I should retain the firewalls provided by ICS and my virus checker and so on.
It is easy to see I have a lot to learn, but if I can find a coherent source of information I know that I can get this darn phone working
Any pointers will very much appreciated - I am slowly finding hints in my Net searching, but no definite instructions how to proceed confidently and smoothly with preparing my little home network setting to use my new IP phone.
