seeking advice on two OE6 problems

I'm switching to Outlook Express as a news reader after years of using
Agent. It's working pretty well, but I need advice on how to make a couple
of things work the way I prefer.

First, how can I make it download new message headers only when I tell it
to, and NOT download them automatically when I select a news group?

Second, why does marking all messages in all news groups as "read" take such
a very, very, very long time? I am subscribed to about eight news groups,
none of them extremely active; I timed this operation at 1 minute and 55
seconds! With Agent it took 2 seconds. I need to figure out how to speed up.

I found that the operation goes much faster if I select each newsgroup in
turn and mark it "read" individually. Ironically I'm switching to Outlook
Express because it works better with speech recognition software, since I
have carpal tunnel syndrome and can no longer used the keyboard or mouse
extensively. Thus marking a newsgroup individually instead of marking them
all at once is a type of accommodation I cannot well afford to make.

Ask in an Outlook Express forum. This is an Microsoft Office Outlook forum.
Outlook Express is family of Internet Explorer and Outlook of the Office
family.

Good Luck!

OK, but I think a little feedback on this will be useful.

Looking at the traffic here, I see that you're getting questions about
Outlook Express regularly. There is a reason for that: people who look to
USENET for technical information find that there are no newsgroups for
Outlook Express except for specialized topics (IE5, Macintosh, developers)
and certain foreign languages. The Outlook newsgroups are the only closely
related ones.

In other words, it's obvious to everybody except management and regular
visitors that this newsgroup IS an Outlook Express forum, because nothing
more specific is available.

I'll go to the web-based forum you recommended, and I thank you for the
reference. But you should understand that until you either expand the
definition of this newsgroup or create another one, the "problem" of people
bringing their Outlook Express questions to the "wrong" place will persist.

Rubbish. They are just hidden if the posters are using the web access -
under Internet Explorer.

The Outlook newsgroups are the only closely
related ones.

No see above.

Again see above.
