I have tall order if anyone is interested in this mission impossible.

I'm looking for a program that given the dimensions of the source
material, can take input of irregular shapes and optimise the
placement of those shapes, so when cut out of the source material,
will leave the minimum waste.

And something that is freeware. [=:

Can anyone help me with this impossible task, please...?

Thank you Phil. Anyone else got any links and info to the same sort
of thing, but a program that can deal with irregular shapes?

not sure if this will help, but have a look here - www.astrokettle.com

they have a free util called 1D Stock Cutter which does what your asking,
only for linear materials...

hope this helps...

No. Sorry.

That is usually called the 'nesting problem', there may be something under
that.

1d easy 2d harder 3d very hard
complexity increases depending on how irregular the shapes are
and if orientation is significant
eg all cuts must align with fabric orientation

You could be talking many hours on a supercomputer here.

Allowing 'near optimal within 1%' could decrease the problem from hours to
seconds.

You may like to have a look at our PLUS 2D - Nesting and Panel
Optimization Software. There is a download available on the website...

Is this freeware or a demo?

Crippleware. It says on the site :

"Some of the features related to output, DXF export, and Database have
been limited."

If they are dishonest when promoting their software here I suggest
that people stay away from them.
