I have a wireless router installed on my home network for the benefit of a
few specific visitors who bring along their laptops. Only they are
authorized to connect. But we've noticed that the laptops from time to
time show other non-connecting signals apparently nearby. Is there any way
that I can see a similar display on my master desktop? Or do I have to have
a transceiver card like the laptops use and appropriate software?

Well, Duuuuuuuhh. Don't you think you would need a receiver to RECEIVE
wireless signals???

Im a bit confused here. Are you saying that when you have a wireless laptop
in your home it sees other wireless networks? If thats what you are talking
about then yes you would need a wireless adapter plugged into a computer to
see any wireless networks floating around your area.
