When I click on my USB memory stick, instead of showing me the contents, it
opens in a search dialogue box and then I have to click to get to my files.
I'm not sure what I've done to make this happen, and I can't figure out how
to make it automatically open showing my files and folders that are on the
memory stick.

Hi Carol,

See if this fix, provided courtesy of Doug Knox, helps you to resolve the
problem:

Fixes the problem where Search or Command Prompt opens when double clicking
a folder

The above fix applies to drives as well as folders. It makes the necessary
changes to the system Registry so that Open is the default action.

Regards,

To set Autoplay for a content type for the memory stick, open My Computer and right
click the drive letter that refers to your memory stick, then click Properties, then
the Autoplay tab (You'll need to have the memory stick inserted before you do this).

Click the drop down arrow and set it to the file type you want to set, then click
the circle next to "Select an action to perform" and choose the desired action you
want performed, and click Apply.

Repeat for each content type in the dropdown list....if there is a content type for
which you do want to be prompted each time, select the "Prompt me each time to
choose an action" radio button for that file type, and click Apply.

To restore the Autoplay back to the defaults open My Computer and right click the
drive letter that refers to your memory stick, then click Properties, then the
Autoplay tab.

Click the drop down arrow and set it to the file type you want to set, then click
the circle next to "Select an action to perform" and then click the button that says
Restore Defaults.
