Seeing non AD computers

Hi,

Apologies of this is a stupid question - I am new here.

I have a work machine which has recently been migrated to AD. Before
it was in AD I could bring it home- plug it in to me local network and
share files etc (easier to work on files on my home computer than my
work laptop - better screen and full mouse etc).

Anyway - now my laptop is in an AD domain at work - I sign on with
cached credentials at home and although my local machine has a open
share called "dropbox" , I cant see it via my work machine.

My home network is a win98Se machine which just acts as a dropbox, my
main work is done on my main home machine - whcih is WinXP Pro - which
is also kept very secure.

So my question - why cant I drop and pick up files from my work
machine to the Win98SE machine open share dropbox folder?

Just FYI - home network is a Broadband connection shated via an
SMC7004ABR router - Win98se and WinXPpro are in same "workgroup" - so
not in domain.

Sorry if I have not explained the porblem well - let me know if you
need more info.

Hope you can help since I am sure this is not an uncommon scenario -
so hopefully there is a simple solution.

TIA and best regards

Come on peeps, cant you help me?

What the problem?

1. Question too stupid to warrant an answer?
2. Question not clear enough?
3. Not enough info to answer?
4. No-one knows the answer?

I have an interim solution - which is to FTP the files to a web server
and back again - But its crazy - why cant I use file sharing on my
home network?

TIA for any help
Cheers.

Can you see any shares at all on the machine? Can win98 communicate with the
work machine (ping by name and IP)? Can you type \\pcname and see it and
any of it's shares? Can the XP client on your home LAN see it. Can your
work Laptop see the home LAN clients? Make sure that connectivity is
working.

Thanks for your interest - pretty sure I have tried all you suggest
Can you see any shares at all on the machine?

No - cant see computers at all - if I explore network from work
machine Ican see the "Workgroup" but if I try and expand to see the
machines in the group it comes up with message to say it cant.
Can win98 communicate with the work machine (ping by name and IP)?

I can ping from work machine to Win98 - not sure I have tried other
way round - I will check and get back to you.
Can you type \\pcname and see it and any of it's shares?

Tried mapping directly from work machine to Win98 via \\pcname\dropbox
and \\ipAddress\dropbox - neither work - I will recheck and get back
with message it gives.
Can the XP client on your home LAN see it.

Yes - XP can see Win98 share no problelm and can share files etc
Can your work Laptop see the home LAN clients?

No - per above - it can see the 'workgroup' but cannot expand it to
show clients
Make sure that connectivity is >working.

Connectivity is fine in general - Work machine can see workgroup, can
see internet, can VPN to my office. One thing - In router domain name
on LAN is set to "workgroup" - so when I search network from work PC
it may only be seeing as far as router? and not the workgroup? (I am
guessing here). DOnt know if that is significant.

I will do a few more checks and get back with more info.

Just retested - message is "Workgroup is not accessable. The network
path cannot be found"
I can ping from work machine to Win98 - not sure I have tried other

Just checked - I can ping from work to WIn98 OK - or from Win98 to
work machine (W2K Prof)
Tried mapping directly from work machine to Win98 via \\pcname\dropbox
and \\ipAddress\dropbox - neither work - I will recheck and get back
with message it gives.

Just retested - when I try add new network place - add as
\\<ip address>\dropbox
is fails - message is "The network place could not be added because
the following error has occured. There are currently no logon servers
available to service the logon request"
Presume this is because I am at home and so no AD domain controllers
around.
Yes - XP can see Win98 share no problelm and can share files etc

Confirm - this still works - XP can see Win98 share, win98 can see XP
share - neither can see the work machine when browsing the network.
No - per above - it can see the 'workgroup' but cannot expand it to
show clients

Rechecked - see above for error message

Just to check I blanked out the "workgroup" entry in the router domain
- made no difference - still can see 'Workgroup' when browsing network
from work machine - but still cant drill down lower.
I will do a few more checks and get back with more info.

Hope this extra info helps.
