Seeing all the files?

Hi all,

When using the Windows Explorer program for file management
I don't "see" all the files and directories that are on the system.
I know how to change the variables to see system files and other
normally hidden files but I have run across several files that do
not even show up when all those variables are set to show
everything. Is there another files manager that shows EVERY
file on the computer no matter what it is? and can that same
program change all the file attributes?

thanks,
charles......

There is not a really good free program that I am aware of.

That seems rather odd. Can you give some examples?

I don't think there's a need to use any additional software to show
all files, despite someone else's suggestion.

The system said I had a file called c:\outlook.pst in the root directory and
I couldn't see it with Windows Explorer. There are literally thousands of
hidden directories and files on an XP machine, at least on mine. I don't
think I have ever seen a list of all of them in Explorer.

later.....

There is no reason why a *.pst file wouldn't show up if you've enabled
all the hidden files. There are four checkboxes to deal with:

a. Check "Display the contents of system folders".
b. Check "Show hidden files and folders".
c. Uncheck "Hide extensions for known file types".
d. Uncheck "Hide protected operating system files" and click "OK" to the
dialog box.

Note: this assumes a virus/malware-free computer.

What do you mean by "the system"? Which program told you this?

In the mean time, open an Explorer wins, e.g. "My Computer", and
Toold
Folder Options
View
Under "Files and Folders" slick "Show hidden files and folder", then
OK.
