Sam

I would like to see other PCs hardware over the network.
Is there a way to see other clients on the network from
the server and see the hardware specification?

If you are looking for a programmatic version of software to find out the
specs of your PC's on the network Belarc has a tool called Belarc Advisor
that works well. There are other less elegant ways to find your information
but I prefer a GUI interface. http://www.belarc.com/products.html

Does it only work on local disks? It sounds from the
description that it doesn't report the hardware info from
other computers on the network. Does it work and gather
info from another machine?

It can be done a couple of ways. You can push out the Advisor remotely and
then retrieve the resulting file which I believe is an html doc remotely, or
you can pay for the Belarc Manager which is a central server that acts as a
repository for the Belarc advisor results.

If you are looking to go smaller scale and retrieve jsut the basics you may
be able to use a freeware tool from www.sysinternals.com called psinfo.
Here is the link explaining what psinfo will do:

Maybe that is all you need.

I just ran Belarc Advisor, it didn't give me a option to
choose a remote machine to see it's results. As soon as I
ran it, it automatically open the web browser and
displayed the details on my machine (local machine) and
not another computer.

The only thing I didn't like with the PSinfo from
sysinternals.com is that you need to also be running a
remote registry service. This means two things need to be
running. That's not exactly what I had in mind, although
it does seem it will do the trick I'm after. I really
don't want to go this route.
