My laptop is brand new and has IE6 as part of windows XP home with SP2.
Whenever I try and test a couple of my websites, in which there are
java-based slideshows amongst other things, I get a security warning and am
asked whether I want to allow potentially dangerous stuff to open. I have
had this on other machines and when I say yes it's ok (I know it's not
dangerous because it is my site) the site appears.
But on this new machine, nothing happens. The warning disappears but my site
doesn't appear.
How can I disable this?

Mike - did you install a Java VM on your new machine? WinXP doesn't come
with it anymore.
http://www.java.com/en/

If so, then check your security settings - Tools...Internet
Options...Security...Custom - make sure Java, scripting, Active Content are
set to Prompt.

Or, add those sites to the Trusted Sites zone.

Soon after I posted this message, I read some stuff online that said IE6 did
not ship with Java VM.
So I downloaded and installed it and followed your advice. But I am still
getting:

Sorry, Java is disabled or not installed. xatshowApplet web slideshow
cannot start

It even happens if I enable instead of prompt in security settings.
And put the site in trusted sites.

The problem now is that if I am having problems, so will almost
everyone else with vanilla IE6 on their machines and they won't be going to
this trouble to see my content.

It'll have to be Flash in future I suppose!

I realised just after posting this message that Windows XP doesn't come with
Java VM and installed it. And I have tried various combinations of security
settings (your suggestions came as default on my XP when VP installed).
Still it doesn't run.
My concern is that as XP becomes ubiquitous, most people won't even try and
to go the trouble I have to install Java and so material in this form on a
website will be useless. So I suppose I have to move now to Flash.
