I will be purchasing Vista Ultimate. Do I retain my current independent
Firewall as was advised for Win.XPPro?

What do you mean by current independent firewall? A hardware firewall or a
router with NAT and SP1 or a software firewall?

There is a basic 2 way firewall in Vista, but if you want a higher level of
control you'll still need a third party one.

There are no Vista compatible 3rd party firewalls yet, AFAIK. Vista does
come with a two way software firewall.

My independent (software) Firewall is with ZoneAlarm. Do you mean in further
posting (<There are no Vista compatible 3rd party firewalls yet, Vista does

software, before installing Win.Vista Ultimate? and what about AVG
antivirus? do I remove that as well? I heard doubts expresses by an
interviewer with Mr. Gates on TV that Vista is fully Secure.

You should uninstall ZoneAlarm and AVG before upgrading to Vista. After the
upgrade is complete you can reinstall the latest version of AVG which is
Vista compatible. ZoneAlarm does not currently have a Vista compatible
version. Vista does have a very effective firewall built in. It can be more
complicated to manage than ZoneAlarm but it works as well if not better.

Trend Micro's Internet Security 2007 sports a Vista certification logo.
I haven't loaded Vista yet so I can't verify that it actually works but
you can check www.trendmicro.com

Yes remove any system level utilities: AV program, Firewall, partitioning
programs, tweakui, etc. Run the upgrade advisor for guidance, but no matter
what it says remove those classes of programs that I have listed. Also
remove things like Nero or Roxio, that is - any software that installs
drivers.

AFAIK Zone alarm does not have a Vista version yet. The Vista firewall is
activated by default. Vista does not have an AV, but AVG does have a Vista
compatible, free AV that works fine. So does Avast. Nod32, Trend Micro and
CA all have paid versions that work. Vista has Windows Defender which is
for non viral malware.

No OS is fully secure. The most important component in computer security is
the common sense of the operator. Vista is much more secure than XP.

Do I remove programmes such as Roxio just during the Upgrade installation or
do you mean these will not be compatible with Win.Vista ever?

What version of Roxio? I am using version Easy Media Creator 7.5. Most of
the apps in this suite installed and run fine except that Sonics Backup MyPC
wouldn't install and CinePlayer won't run but the other apps in the suite
are fine. I don't know about earlier versions but I would hazard a guess
they will not, though you can try the install. The current version is 9
which runs fine on Vista I have heard.

Yes it's a good idea to remove programs like Roxio that require low level
access and/or install drivers before upgrading to Vista. You should have as
clean a system as you can get. Once Vista is installed you can re-install
them if they are Vista compatible. Even if they are not you may be able to
get some to run by running the setup using Run as administrator and trying
different compatibility options. It may take some experimenting with
different options.

Rock:

Symantec's NIS 2007 supports Vista

And, I have been using Vista Firewall Control for some time.
