Recently after installing the most current version of
Windows XP and the 2000 suite of software, I have been
bombarded with junk mail and spyware.

This happened after I set up individual logon accounts for
my wife and son. The two new accounts receive popups,
threats of disruption unless one takes action, and
disruption (screen goes blank)and cd drive pops out.

What is the extend of your security and does it protect
against the ills previously described

Sounds like you are not using a properly configured firewall. A firewall, antivirus
software such as Norton that can scan emails and scans your computer weekly, and
keeping your critical updates current at Windows Update are a must. In addition I
would recommend running Something like AdAware at least weekly to check your computer
and perhaps hardening your Internet Explorer settings taking advantage of the trusted
Web Content Zone and setting the internet Web Content Zone to high, and a good pop up
stopper like the Google toolbar. Also never use your real email address in newsgroups
where they can be harvested. Check with your ISP about filtering your email or create
mail/news rules in Outlook Express to filter your email. --- Steve
