I'm trying to sort out security zones on our network, and for one reason and
another had to enter the registry and manually clear all the sites in the
various security zones to start from scratch.
After rebooting I find I'm always getting a MSN entry appear and can't find
anything in my settings that would cause this. Can someone else check their
machine and see if it exists for them.
The registry key is:
HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet
Settings\ZoneMap\Domains
In there I get a kep appearing right at the top of the domain list, with a
blank name and containing a single DWORD key called 'msn' which has a value
of 0.
According to Microsoft's documentation for the security zones
(http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=182569), this means I have an 'msn' item
being treated as in the 'My Computer' zone.
Now call me suspicious, but the 'My Computer' zone doesn't display in
Internet Explorer so there's normally no way to know what is, or is not in
this zone. I find it very curious that there's a random 'msn' item being
added to this zone without me having any control over it.
Would be very interested if anyone has an explanation for what this does, or
if someone can confirm that it's not happening on other computers (and hence
is a configuration problem on this network somewhere).
thanks,
Ross
