Security updates slowed down browsing?

I downloaded and installed all available security updates (30MB+) last
night. Since then my browser, IE6, appears to have slowed down ie:
searching takes longer and pages take longer to load. Using XP Pro with
SP1.
Is there a particular one which can cause this? If so I would like to
remove it.

If you're using WinXP Pro SP1 then you didn't download all available
updates. If you had you would be using SP2.

I have not had an update slow down IE in the last few years. One cause can
be spyware that didn't cause a problem until you improved the security.
First eliminate any spyware.

In WinXP SP2: You can fix Winsock by going to Start | Run and typing
CMD
In the command window type
netsh winsock reset

Note that AdAware and SpyBot S & D will each catch some things the other
won't. Also, each needs to be updated with the program's update function
before every use, even when just downloaded. There's also a lot more to do

.... "Downloaded and installed all available updates" - so where's SP2??
(it's a sight bigger than SP1)
BEFORE d/l SP2, do read the important pre-requisites (total AV scan, Spybot
or whatever tool of choice for nasties, and defrag)

Thanks for the replies. I have SP2 but have heard so many horror stories
about it I didn't install it. Also some of the software I have is on the
list of those which may not work right after installing it.
Re: possible spyware I use updated AdAware & Spybot regularly. Also a
regularly updated AV & firewall (Norton).

May want to follow up on the status for those programs with their technical
support. Many from that list have been updated and are now working well
with SP2.
 
Where have you been hearing 'horror stories'? Simply follow the advice
given at
http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/protect/windowsxp/choose.aspx

I have installed it on a half a dozen machines plus another half a dozen
virtual machines and none have had a problem.

If you take what you read in these groups as all that there is to know about
Windows, then nothing ever works. The millions of users who aren't running
into problems don't post here. Mostly only people who have run into a
problem do.
