My Security Update KB956500 keep failing when trying to install.
What steps can I take to find out why and what needs to be done to install it.

Are you trying to use Auto Update to install it? When Auto Update fails
(for various applications, not this problem specifically), I have often
had good success going to the Microsoft site and manually downloading
and installing the update. I don't know if it will work, but it is worth
a try.
