I just did the lates security update on Friday and
rebooted my machine. I left for home and came in Monday
to a machine that cannot get a desk top. How do I 1)
remove this "update" or 2) get beyond it. This isn't the
first time these updates have screwed up my machine and
I'm not happy about the IT solution of starting from
scratch. I've tried the task manager command line and
that failed to deliver.

So can you login? Can you hit Ctrl+Shift+Esc and get Task manager up? Then
start explorer from that? (File|Run|explorer.exe)

Try booting into safe mode or last know good configuration to see if it helps by
repeatedly tapping the F8 key during boot up to bring up the alternate menu. If
you can logon in safe mode, you might try to remove/reinstall the update in safe
mode. If nothing seems to work, consider a fast repair or upgrade install as
described in the KB links below which are a lot better than starting from
scratch. An upgrade install will require the reinstallation of service pack and
all critical updates. --- Steve

I have a similar problem ....
The Windows Update icon was flashing in the bottom right
hand corner of my computer last night - I installed the
updates and rebooted. Since that time I get the error
mentioned below everytime I try to open IE.
In addition, I get an "explorer.exe" error everytime I try
to go to START>SETTINGS>CONTROL PANEL or when I right
click on My Computer.
I run Norton AntiVirus twice daily and do the live update
once a day. When I rebooted the computer after the
updates - Norton AntiVirus did not start up automatically
as is usually does.
Should I do the same thing that you recommended to bill k?
