We are currently using Windows 2000 Pro, but I believe my question is
pertinent to W2K or XP Pro. My users currently need Administrator rights on
their workstations in order to use some of the applications installed on
their PCs.

I would like to lock that down and return them to User status. I have the
impression that by using compatws.inf, I could achieve that goal. Am I
correct? If I use that template and it doesn't work, is there a way to return
to the default template or is a re-install the only alternative?

Thanks!

Hi.

Using compatws will actually give your users group "power users" status.
This is almost as bad as giving them admin rights, so in fact we would not
recommend that. As you mention our recommendation is to use USERS group and
work out the security permissions required to get all of your applications
working correctly. If you really can't do that, then test applying the
template - it will provide a slightly more locked down environment than
Admin.

If you do apply it, you can reset the security settings back to default by
applying the secsetup.inf file from the /repair folder as per.
