Please help,
I have followed the online step by step Access Security
instructions but somehow confused myself. I want to start
over in my security setup (so I can master this process)
but want to be cautious. Can I just delete the workgroup
information file along with my secured mdb, then
copy into my folder another mdb and start fresh with the
security wizard?

thanks in advance.

Do NOT delete the .mdw file ... instead, you can "desecure" your database
.... if you have the MS Access Security FAQ, one of the steps involves
de-securing the database.

Not sure that I agree with Scott on this one.

It should be ok to delete a workgroup file, as long as you understand that
this could invalidate EVERY DATABASE THAT HAS EVER BEEN CREATED AGAINST THAT
WORKGROUP FILE.

So if you are absolutely certain that you created a new workgroup file for
your secured database - and you have not created any other databases against
that workgroup file - and you are happy to delete the partially secured
database AS WELL AS the workgroup file - then that should be ok.

Of course, it would be prudent to >rename< those files and/or move them to a
different folder, until you are confident that removing them had no adverse
affects.

Hi TC,

I would agree with you regarding the file deletions ... I was concerned that
if the user deleted the .mdw file used to build his database and (a) didn't
store the info necessary to recreate and (b) somehow got the db properly
secured on the first pass then they would be unable to de-secure that
database. But you are, of course, correct given your parameters.

Yes, I understand your concern. Perhaps the middle path would be for him to
rename the workgroup file and/or move it to a different folder. Then all of
us can simultaneously have, & eat, our respective cakes!

Cheers,
TC
