I am thinking of setting up a wireless network, now the question> what is the distance that an intruder could access the connection if the setup is not secure? Modem>Linksys router>wireless PCI card.

some signals can be picked up from 30m away and if you get a high power setup with no walls i think 100m would be achieveable

but if you set it up properly, with encryption and MAC filtering it should be pretty secure, unless they are really determined

Thanks Me-2001:thumb: now my house has 3ft thick walls in the room I am using also all the out side walls:eek: it is about 70Metres from my nearest Neighbour so I should be ok do you think? unsecured that is.

i think it would be ok, just set up the basic encryption and that usually deters most people

You should be OK - but why leave it unsecured:confused:

How are you Ady;) well as I build quite a number of PCs and I am ashamed to say:o I hate setting up with encryption? I never seem to get it correct:o is there an easy way to do it?:) if so can you point me in that direction:thumb:

I've had some fun walking about with my mate's laptop, we can connect just about anywhere in inner London, hehe ;)

All solid cabled ethernet here baby :D

I'm OK itsme - feeling alot better now thanks, just got the funeral to go now on Friday:(

Don't be embarrassed - must admit it seemed pretty daunting when I first attempted it!!

You need to connect with a cable to start off, and enter the router settings by typing http://192.168.1.1 in the address bar of your browser.

Go to the wireless section and enable it, put in an SSID (such as 'itsmi Wireless') keep the SSID Broadcast enabled at this stage.

Then enable WEP, and generate either a 64bit or 128 bit encription key (64 should be adequate to keep random snoopers away)

Make sure you make a note of the encryption key!

Save your settings and exit, then activate the wireless PCI card software to scan for available networks, it will pick up your Linksys one, ask to connect and it will go through a set up whereby you put in the previously generated encryption key and the SSID.

Save it, connect, and then hopefully away you go:thumb:

Then go back ito the router setup and disable the SSID Broadcast so others can't see it when scanning.

:)

Hello mate, you're quite safe - I wont tell him exactly which part of Newport you live;)

As regards making sure you have written down the security keys & SSID properly, I copy and paste them into a .txt file and the move it around the network with a USB stick. (You can then delete the .TXT file or secure it another way.)

Just one suggestion, sorry Ady for conflicting advice, but I usually recommend giving the network SSID is a totally random collection of letters and numbers so that it's harder to define the signal source if for some reason the SSID is left broadcasting (in error).

No problem, using his name was just a suggestion - using a random SSID seems like a good idea:)
