Any way to prevent someone from running off with an external hard drive and
in effect, stealing your business? Any way to prevent access or make the
drive unreadable?

Thanks

Use encryption software.

So you're suggesting that I encrypt 40 gigs of stuff? Isn't there some
easier way like a password to view the hard drive?

If someone goes to the trouble of stealing the drive, they will
probably go to the trouble of cracking the password.
Encryption seems to be the only viable and cost effective solution.
Use PGP or something similar.

Remember, if you take the easy way out to secure something, it tends
to be easy to break into.

You could always lock it in the closet or safe when it's not in use.

There appear to be a number of options available, a Google search on
HDD Security returns many possibilities both software and hardware. A
couple that may be of interest to you are CipherShield (a USB/Firewire
external enclosure that uses a USB security key)and StorageCrypt (a
software HDD encryptor).

Thanks - I'll check into that.
