All of a sudden a security sign in is popping up on my windows email every
time I try to send or receive an email. Is there any way to override this?
Or a reason it has suddenly started doing this? Thanks

When the log on box appears in WM requesting PW & UN always click cancel,
never OK.

Or WM wipes the settings.

Only ever enter your detail at tools>accounts etc, and as I say always
cancel the request pop up.

Get back with any error complete error messages.

Please start a new thread, never piggy-back with a "me too" post, it
complicates matters and readers may follow the wrong information.

When you start your own thread, please provide any complete unedited error
messages that WM gives when you try to send or receive mail.

Tell us if the account ever worked properly?

Tell us who your mail provider is and the name of your ISP.

Todd you should have started your own thread.

Go to Tools>Accounts>select your account>properties>Server tab.

Ensure that neither of the check boxes are selected for password or SMTP
authentication, Apply>OK any changes.

See for full instructions, it says Outlook Express, but WM uses the same
settings.

Can you login at
https://www.verizon.net/ssowebapp/protected/EmailLoginHelper with your PW &
UN?

@Todd: Thanks for including the complete error message. It makes
diagnosing so much easier.
Go to Tools, Accounts, select that mail account, Properties, Servers.
Make sure that "Log on using Secure Password Authentication" is not enabled.

@Nick: Thanks for including the complete error message.
First, test your password by logging in to your provider's webmail:
http://webmail.verizon.net .
If that works, it proves you have the correct username and password.
A likely reason for the username/password failing in Windows Mail is
account corruption. One thing you should try as a possible quick fix is
to delete that corrupted mail account, restart Windows Mail, then
recreate that account.

If that doesn't fix it, more drastic measures will have to be taken.
Which antivirus are you running?
As a minimum, email scanning in the antivirus must be turned off,
although that may not be sufficient to eliminate all bad effects.
In a worst case scenario, your antivirus may need to be uninstalled.

If turning off the email scanning function does not resolve your problem,
consider upgrading to Windows Live Mail, because it is less prone to
suffering bad effects from overly aggressive antivirus programs.

Email scanning in any antivirus must be disabled, for reasons
explained here:

Doesn't it seem a little odd to anyone that this is happening to so many
people at once? A little more so then just random problems for each
individual. I got my email at 7 am and everything was working just fine.
Then at noon I went to send an email and up popped that security window.
Thinking it was something new, I complied, but all I got was this:

Account: 'incoming.verizon.net', Server: 'incoming.verizon.net', Protocol:
POP3, Server Response: '-ERR invalid command', Port: 110, Secure(SSL): No,
Server Error: 0x800CCC90, Error Number: 0x800CCC91

No programs were changed or updated by me or anybody else between those
hours, so it appears to me to be something internal and not random from
person to person.

I will anxiously be awaiting some kind of explanation or declaration that
the problem has been resolved as using my email is a very important part of
my work day.

It would be more than a coincidence if all the people reporting this
problem were using the same provider (such as Verizon), but that
is not the case. There have been no changes to Windows Mail or
Windows that would account for this. So unless we see a lot more
of this particular issue, I think it is just a random thing.

You don't have to "cancel" Windows Mail in order to use
Windows Live Mail It's not like you have a subscription or
membership to Windows Mail.
Windows Mail is part of the Vista operating system and can't be
uninstalled. Just let it lie dormant.
