Hi,

I've installed the RPC flaw fix (10 september) on 15 different W2K
PCs and have found that when installed on a Win2k with SP4
the RPC service has lots of trouble to start. I get full of events
in the event log regarding this:

Event Type: Error
Event Source: Service Control Manager
Event Category: None
Event ID: 7022
Date: 23/09/2003
Time: 12.07.59
User: N/A
Computer: DT092203A
Description:
The Remote Procedure Call (RPC) service hung on starting.

Event Type: Error
Event Source: Service Control Manager
Event Category: None
Event ID: 7001
Date: 23/09/2003
Time: 12.07.59
User: N/A
Computer: DT092203A
Description:
The Print Spooler service depends on the Remote Procedure Call (RPC) service
which failed to start because of the following error:
After starting, the service hung in a start-pending state.

and so on. Now the users cannot for example print because the print spooler
does not start, nor many other services that are quite vital.
The login screen halts on 'Preparing Network Connections...' for 2-3 minutes
before it continues. This seems to happen only on SP4 machines. SP3 ones do
not have any problems (so far?)

I've checked with support.microsoft.com, google, news groups but found
nothing.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

Laura

Hi Marina,

there are no virus. I double checked with two scanner tools too.
Two of the machines are clean install that have seen only CDs, not
yet even connected to network, both with SP4. The CDs are clean.
They both exhibit this RPC service failure.
The other machines are mix of SP3 and SP4 but only the SP4 ones
have these problems.
And then, the error comes up when booting up so it can't be blaster
or other virus if not started as service, but I think RPCSS is the first
so nothing could "disturb" it, thats why I think the problem is the KB
patch.

Check the ipconfig/all from the clients. Does everything point to your
server-IP?

Everything matches.
I uninstalled the RPC patch and the errors disappeared.
I reinstalled the RPC patch and the errors come up again.

I really think I must call MS support to get this resolved.

Thanks!

Laura
