Security message and disappearing folder contents

From time to time, I'm having a problem that I'm hoping
someone can shed some light on (Dell Latitude 860, SP4, W2K):
when I click on, say, a film file in one of my folders, I
get some sort of security script message ('file has
changed, do you want to accept script?') and then the
folder contents disappear and I get a tiny little box with a
little dot in the middle, barely discernable, in the upper
left corner. All folders revert to this and I have to
reboot to get back the folder contents. A few desktop icons
also move and the 'my documents' icon disappears completely
(until rebooting).

It's always important to write down and post the full word for word error
message. Either that's not the real error message, or that's not a real
Windows error message and you're infected with something. The first thing I
would do if I had the exact error message is search www.google.com for that
error message.

This may also help:

If that doesn't help, there's a good chance this isn't a security problem
and you'd get a better answer posting in another group.

Sound like you have a graphics handling program installed
that extends explorer and has run amuk, either on its own or
via exploit.
In process of the search Karl has suggested you may want
to be aware of what media handling apps are installed.
