Security errors in Vista

Each time I boot up I get multiple security errors. It is a Mesh Machine
with Windows Vista; I have had the machine for about 6 weeks, but the problem
has only arisen in the last 3 weeks.
Malware protection states “Windows did not find any antivirus software on
this computerâ€. But I am running AVG, fully activated.

Spyware and other protection states “Windows Defender is turned offâ€. It
isn’t, it is on.

Any ideas

Brink, thanks for this - Real time protection is checked.
The messages from Security centre are:
"Windows Defender is turned off" - when I click on available options I
either have the choice of monitoring my own anti spyware or going online to
get an anti-spyware programme.
And
Malware protection states “Windows did not find any antivirus software on
this computerâ€. But I am running AVG, fully activated. I then have the
option of monitoring it myself or going online to get an antivirus programme
Both AVG and Windows Defender are switched on and working properly!

Try this:

Right-click Command Prompt and Run as Administrator. Type the following
command:

winmgmt /verifyrepository

If the system returns "WMI repository is not consistent", run this command:

winmgmt /salvagerepository

The first time you run this it will fail. It will issue stop commands to
the services causing it to fail. It might take a couple minutes for the
services to shut down. Run the command again. You actually may have to run
it 3 times before it finally runs and completes on its own.

Reboot your system.

Excellent, many thanks - problem fixed

Dean Dean - you are a life saver. I have no idea how you would know of that
fix but the problem was driving me batty. I followed your instructions and
presto!
Thanks also for including that I needed to run the command at least 3 times.
I would have given up without that small piece of info.
Thanks again

Just tried this and I've hit a new problem, when I type winmgmt
/verifyrepository into cmd it comes back with: winmgmt is not recoginzed as
an internal or external command, operable program or batch file
Any ideas how to fix this, think this could be the root casue of Windows
Security Center giving false readings
