Security concerns

I have just signed up for SBC DSL and have serious concerns about security.
I just did an Ad-aware test and found 48 objects related to spying cookies
even though security settings are set at medium and many features are
disabled. I have gone to Yahoo DSL help and to PC World sites for
information on firewalls and antispyware but am more confused now than ever.
I have Norton AntiVirus for virus and am happy with it, have Lavasoft
Ad-Aware but no firewall yet. My computers (3) at home are not in a home
network, except for wireless DSL network and my husband and I are the only
users. We only surface the net for shopping and educational searches in
photography, arts and crafts and news mostly. I also have the latest updates
from MS Windows updates for the three versions of Windows we have. (If it is
not OK to mention brand names in this medium, I apologize and you will
probably edit it. ) Anyway, can someone help with clarifying for me or
referring me to a site where I can find specific clear information on what
the recommended software to use is. Will firewalls also protect against
spyware? I know I can't have perfect protection but want to do the best I
can. Any comments will be appreciated. Thanks, Josie

Henri, thank you for your recommendations. I will look into it so I can
understand what a "host" file is and the rest of the other security
options. Will write again if I havequestions about it. Ciao
