My WinXP Home Edition PC no longer autoupdates. Why? The Security Center
is disabled. Going in to Services and changing in to automatic has no
impact, since it reverts to disabled when the PC is booted.

I have run various AVG & Bitdefender and have found nothing.

I have run MSAS, SpyBot, AdAware, CounterSpy & Spy Sweeper and have found
nothing.

Any thoughts as to what might be wrong?
 
What is AutoUpdate set to ?
I don't like the Automatic setting, because it requires me to pick a
time to run, but I'm not usually on my PC the same time every day.
Instead of 8 hours a day like most people, I only use it 8 hours a week.

So if AutoUpdate is set to run at 12 noon every day, but you are never
on your PC at 12 noon every day, then AutoUpdate will never run.

I prefer the setting that proceeds to download anytime I'm on my PC, but
let's me choose to install updates when it's more convenient for me. I
usually end up doing it, whenever the balloon pops up telling me that
updates are ready to install.
 
In Control Panel, can you open AutoUpdate ?
It should appear as a choice separate from Security Center.

auto-updates will be disabled after rebooting. You want to know how to

Would you please let me know the following information:
1. In your current situation, can you successfully update Windows by click
"Start">"All programs">"Windows update"?
2. If the manual update failed, is there any error message available?
3. Please send me a screenshoot of the settings of your "Automatic Updates"
(Right click on "My computer", select properties, choose "Automatic
Updates" tab)
4. Please send the "WindowsUpdate.log" file to me <[email protected]>,
if you can find it in your windows directory ("C:\windows" by default)

Please let me know the information above so that I can provide further
assistance on this problem. I am looking forward to your reply.

It does not matter what time of day you set it at. If you have your
computer set to autoupdate at 3 a.m., and the computer is off, but you get
up at 8 a.m. and turn the computer on, it will check for updates. The
actual time is immaterial. If the computer is off, or busy, and cannot
check at that time, it will check at the next available time when the
computer is on or not busy.

I don't know how you had the idea that it would not run. Had you set it to
auto, at *ANY* time, it would still auto update. Just because your computer
was not on, does not mean it would not check.

Thanks for correcting me. I will be the first to admit that I make
mistakes sometimes, but it's not really hard to figure out how I got the
idea that it would not run. It's common sense, if you consider that
most electronic devices will do nothing at the time they are set to do
something, if the power is off at the time they are set to do something.

I came to my conclusion based on the wording of the menu choices, and
based on the wording of the menu choices (without inferring other
implied meanings), I had no reason to believe it would do other things,
not stated or implied in the wording of the menu choices. Common sense.
