The Security Center has quit giving me alerts, the icon never appears in the
notification area. Checked settings and I have alerts enabled. What gives?

Ahhhhhhhh, but I have read.
My computor is in "red" state now, (anti-virus out of date, auto update off)
and still no icon in the notification area. If I open Security Center by way
of the start menu or control panel I am told these things, but no alerts.

Click Change the way Security Center alerts me. Check boxes beside the items for
which you want to receive alerts, and then click OK.

Check settings here (copy of my settings in the registry):

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Security Center]

"AntiVirusDisableNotify"=dword:00000001

"FirewallDisableNotify"=dword:00000001

"AntiVirusOverride"=dword:00000000

"FirewallOverride"=dword:00000000

NOTE: For example, if you have chosen "I have a firewall solution that I'll monitor
myself" and the similar option for Anti-virus monitoring, both the values
AntiVirusOverride & FirewallOverride are set to 1.

Maintenance

All three boxes are checked and all the registry settings are "0".
If I turn on "Auto Updates" I get the yellow Icon in the notification area
when updates are downloading but I never get the red Icon telling me my anti
virus needs updating. If I open "Security Center" it tells me anti virus is
out of date but I never get the alert, not even if I turn off the firewall.

What if the Security Center doesn't recognize my firewall or antivirus software?
Not all firewall and antivirus programs are designed to report this information. In
fact, there are some antivirus programs and firewall solutions (including hardware
firewalls, such as those built into network routers) that the Security Center may not
detect at all.

If you're unsure about the status of your antivirus or firewall solution, or if you
receive a Security Center alert that seems incorrect, check with your antivirus or
firewall vendor to find out if the software you're running is supported in the
Security Center.

Thanks for your time and interest Taurarian.
I had come across that article several times before, skimmed over it, didn't
see anything that applied. My anti-virus was supported.
Anyway, I read it a little closer this time. I have Internet Connection
Sharing enabled, that makes my XP machine a DHCP server and more importantly
part of a Domain. That article explains that computors on a domain do not
recieve alerts because the administrator takes care of security.
Feeling kind of foolish.
Thanks Again

We both learned something on that one.
Have a good week.
