Security Center says that Windows Defender is turned off

I have Windows Defender running normally on Windows Vista (the task-bar icon
is showing that Defender is on and running ok) but the Security Center is
telling me that Windows Defender is turned off and there is a button to turn
it on. However, when I press the Turn On button (even though I know it is
already turned on) I get the message: "Security Center is updating
definitions for Window Defender". After "searching for definitions" I get
the message: "There are no new definitions available to download for Windows
Defender". I'd like to solve this because the Security Center icon is always
showing me that I have a Security Alert.

I have exactly the same problem. I just installed Windows Vista business
version. It is annoying. Can we send this problem to Microsoft?

Please perform the following to resolve your issues.

Open elevated command prompt and type cd\windows\system32\wbem press enter

Then type ren repository repository.old and press enter.

Restart the computer and check your security center again hopefully
everything should be working there.

Thanks and Regards

Mohit Kapoor

Can you give me more details and step by step instructions on what I have to
do please. I'm not very IT literate.
Thanks.

Right-click Command Prompt and Run as Administrator. Type the following
command:

winmgmt /verifyrepository

If the system returns "WMI repository is not consistent", run this command:

winmgmt /salvagerepository

The first time you run this it will fail. (It will issue stop commands to
the services causing it to fail. It might take a couple minutes for the
services to shut down). Run the command again. You actually may have to
run it 3 times before it finally runs and completes on its own.

Reboot your system.

Hi, petar,

If you have Windows One care installed,
It and other virus programs turn off Windows Defender,
since they have there own programs running in its place.

Jerry

All it says is WMI repository is consistent, however the security center
still says the defender is off and i cannot update it. I tried installing the
32-bit fix and that didn't work either

I have the same problem. I have not found the suggested fixes to be useful.

Specificially:
When Mohit Kapoor wrote > Please perform the following to resolve your

I tried to do that and was greeted with "Access Denied"

But my WMI repository is consistent.

So, the security panel tells me that Windows Defender is off, but Windows
Defender tells me it is on.

I should add that I have have been using this computer for a week and did
not get the notice that Windows Defender was off until today.

Please advise.
Thank you!

Did you resolve this issue as I've got exactly the same problem? Please let
me know how you did it, step by step, please if it worked! Dan.

also if you are running MS Onecare- it will turn off WD when running because
part of once care has WD built in it

I, too, am having the same issue. System was fine yesterday ... isn't today.
I have followed every step outlined in this thread ... even run the
/salvagerepository command MULTIPLE times with restarts ... no good ... I do
not have MS OneCare installed. I use Kapersky Anti-virus (Microsoft lists
this as one of the recommended products). Again, everything has been working
for months with no issues. Now, Windows security center shows Defender is off
and their is no anti-virus software installed. Defender itself shows it is
running, and Kapersky shows that it is running normally. Again, I have
followed every step suggested in this thread ... I'm still having problems.

Also, I tried to do a system restore and that failed as well with "The
writer experienced a transient error. If the backup process is retried, the
error may not reoccur (ox800452f3)".

Advice and additional help??

Have pretty much the same problem as Hornet's. Mohit Kapoor's method did not
work for me. I get a slightly different result from Petar's though and it
shows like this.......

C:\>winmgmt /verifyrepository
WMI repository verification failed
Error code: 0x80041003
Facility: WMI
Description: Access denied

C:\>winmgmt /salvagerepository
WMI repository verification failed
Error code: 0x80041003
Facility: WMI
Description: Access denied

I do not have anti-virus or xxCare One software installed. Previously the WD
was turned On.

I am having the same issues listed. windows security red alert icon is
present each time I start my computer. Just until recently defender has been
working fine- in the security center it says that Malware protection/virus
protection is not located on my computer. Then it says that Defender is off.
I try to turn on but comes back with message that says that there are no new
definitions avail to download to defender.

I need help...

Did you run 'command' from an Elevated Command Prompt first ?
0x80041003 signifies that command is not running with Admin perms.

My Windows started to have similar problem yesterday. The Windows Security
Center showed Windows Defender is out of date. but after mannual update, I
received a message: "There are no new definitions available to download for
Windows." In Windows Defender, it states Real-time protection is on and
Definition version is 1.43.73.0 created on 9/4/2008.
I have tried Mohit Kapoor's solution, but have some problem as Grich had.
After I run winmgmt/verifyrepository, system responded "WMI repository is
consistent".

I do not have any other software; except for AVG, my system is entirely
protected by Microsoft (for good or ill <g>), but i periodically get a
message saying Windows Defender is turned off. In Control Panel, WD tells me
"No unwanted or harmful software is detected. Your computer is running
normally." (This would suggest that WD is in business.) When i click on the
Security Center icon (the shield), it allows me to turn WD back on, but then
i get that message that says "There are no new definitions available to
download for Windows Defender," looking like an error message.

So, at the moment, WD is running, but i'd like to know what is turning it
off, which always happens when i reboot, but also at other times.

I just got the same problem and went all over the internet to find a fix. the
only thing you have to do is download and install windows vista service pack
1. after i finished installing it started working just like normal.
