i've developed an ACCESS database and i want to share it with oher users at
work; i do updates and set-up the WIF on my computer at home. i save the
original file and the short cut that was created to my flash drive and bring
it into work where i move the two files to my desktop on my pc at work.

the first problem i'm having is that the shortcut is unable to find the
database.
second problem - when i double click on the short cut or database - the log
on windo appears - i enter my user name (set up as administrator) and then my
p/w - get the window that says one or the other (name or/and pw) is not
correct. what's happening here?

i'm sharing the db file in a peer to peer scenario on or LAN. the wif i set
up on the original database seems is overlooked - that is i enter the one of
the user names and p/w that i included in the wif i created for the original
db - again i get the window that says one or the other is not correct ( this
happens with a "practice db-- i dont use the db i'm trying to share because
of the other problems i'm having with it.

suggestions would be very appreciated - i'm very, very frustrated at this
point.

First, fix your shortcut. Obviously the path for the files will be
different, so you can't simply copy a shortcut from one computer to another
if the files will not be in the same path.

Second, make sure the shortcut points to the correct mdw file. If you are
using the mdw where your username and password live, then you should have no
problem.

thanks for the fast reply - i appreciate it as im under the gun here.

i need to go back and start at the beginning on this. i tried your
suggestion on one tof the "remote" computers. when i click on the new folder
- i get the request of a pw for owner of the computer - i enter what i am
sure i entered yesterday - at that person computer - and i get the wrong ...
message again.

do you have a link to instructions for doing this? the steps in ACCESS SBS
for ACCESS 2002 (im using 2000) are not helping - i've (admittedly) made a
mess and would like to start from scratch.

Sorry, your post implied that the password was the userid and password from
the access user-level security. I have no idea how you would handle a
computer password.

i misled you, evidently, i am working with and setting up security for a
specific database application that i am sharing. if i open the database and
set up security there - do the same settings apply of all ACCESS
applications? do i have to set up security on each of the computers where i
place a short cut to file on my compter - it seems that way.

how do i "reset" each of the remote computers. my admin pw works on some not
others and i cant get into those where my pw is not working.

The password information is stored in the .mdw file. in order to use your
database (if properly secured) they would need to use the .mdw file you
created.

This is normally accomplished by including the mdw in the shortcut for your
database. The mdw should be stored in a central location. Storing on each
computer would mean that you could not update the file. Only the front-end
database should be on each computer. The back-end and the mdw should be on
a shared resource.

Personally, I would not have each user jjoin the mdw file becasue they would
then have to log in everytime the access any database. Including the mdw in
the shortcut path will let them remain joined to their default mdw file, but
will cause your mdw to be used with your databse.

Hope that helps.
