Security and Service Pack problems

For some reason I've been targeted several times when going online and I've done a clean install of XP several times. I ordered the SP1a CD so I wouldn't have to download. I do however have to download the Live Update update for NAV 2004. I received the SP1a - the first time it indicated extraction couldn't complete because of corrupt file. So I reordered but got the same problem. I did call tech support, but didn't have time to wait for a response. I'll try again tomorrow

In the meantime it's been a long time since I've been able to get to my files on CD as I want to virus check first and also get on line to download and so on. Is it safe with the XP firewall to go to the Symantec site to download their latest version of Live Update? Or should I keep trying to get the SP working first? I can't use NAV w/o the new version of Live Update because the program has problems without it. Or maybe there's a freeware av that I can download to a floppy to transfer to my xp?

You need more than just SP1a.. You need most of the critical patches. And
it is fairly safe (even without SP1a) to be on the Internet if you have that
firewall on.
You can manually update (without LiveUpdate) your NAV software:

Specifically (as of NOW):

Download that 7-8MB file and execute it.. It will update your Virus
definitions to a current one.

If you have a high speed internet connection, then please, download
at least the following two "updates" and burn them to CD, it will save you
time in the future and help you out now as well:

That will get you patched for the most prolific (currently) trojans/worms
out there.


Also notice that before you connect to the Internet in ANY fashion -
especially after a fresh installation - you should turn on the firewall for
your Internet connection. Then you should be able to safely navigate to
http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ and download at least the most critical
updates from there.


You should also order the following CD(FREE):
http://www.microsoft.com/security/protect/cd/order.asp

It contains all of the patches for Windows XP up until October 2003.
Downloading the SP1a network installation and the roll-up comes CLOSE to
this, but leaves out a couple I think.

Go ahead and connect to LiveUpdate with XPs firewall turned on. That'll
protect you from remote exploits. However, do not retieve email or stary to
less-than-honorable websites until you have updated Nav and done a scan.
