JRE or will I be safer with it?
Have a great day!
The JRE really doesn't make any difference AS LONG AS you only have version
6 of the runtime engine. None of its purposes have anything to do with
security/safety with the following exception:
SOME older versions had holes in them that would allow exploits of your
system. Being a new system and not having it though, that's of no
importance to you.
As for should you get it? Not really, unless something complains that it
needs it. Almost always if Java is required, the site requiring it will
tell you that you don't have it and give you a link to download it. Banking
sites sometimes use it, as do some other secure sites on the 'net.
If you get to such a site, they'll tell you, almost always. Any
reputable site will, anyway. Just be sure if you do get it, to get the most
recent, which AFAIK right now is v 6.
You DO have the following, right?
-- Antivirus. And updated constantly
-- A firewall such as ZoneAlarm free.
-- Updated, three or more spyware/malware detectors. Unlike AV, the more
good ones the better for anti spyware. No single program seems to cacth
everything yet.
If you have a NAT modem/router, its firewall functions are good but I
still always suggest always also running a freebie like the ZA application,
but many people let the NAT router be their sole firewall. It's a matter of
degree, and there can be arguements made to support relying on the NAT
alone.
