I have Windows XP - Home, have not installed Vista yet. I am getting a
security alert saying "Your computer is infected". I have the latest AVAST
and Windows Defender versions installed and my scans are all clear. The alert
says to click here to protect your computer, but clicking the alert does
nothing. I turned off the system alerts in the control panel under security
and I have gone in and clicked "disable" > "stop" in the security center. Any
other tips? Thanks!

You really should have posted this in one of the XP groups then. Oh
well, since we're here...

Your computer is infected with one of the many variants of the Smitfraud
trojan. Do the preparatory work here:
http://www.elephantboycomputers.com/page2.html#Removing_Malware

Then do the specific removal steps here:
http://www.elephantboycomputers.com/page2.html#Smitfraud_Trojan

If you know the name of the program giving you these security alerts
(SpyCrush, VirusProtectPro, VirusBursters, etc.) you can also look up
removal instructions here:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/forum55.html

When all else fails, run HijackThis and post your log in one of the
specialty forums listed at the first link above (not here, please).

Standard caveat: If the procedures look too complex - and there is no
shame in admitting this isn't your cup of tea - take the machine to a
professional computer repair shop (not your local version of
BigStoreUSA). Please be aware that not all local shops are skilled at
removing malware and even if they are, your computer may be so infested
that Windows will need to be clean-installed. Have all your data backed
up before you take the machine into a shop.

Are you sure its (1.) "Your Computer is infected" being prompted, or is
(2.)"You computer might be at risk" its seems what you depict if Security
Center for XP.

--------------------------------------------------------------

If it is (2.) You would need to have an Anti-Virus / Windows Update /
Firewall
( Primary needs of Security Center SP2 ) satisfy those needs or so just
choose not to prompt you with those instances by clicking on recommendations
button then on the recommendation console tick on the I have a .... square
box thats ill monitor myself and then click ok.

--------------------------------------------------------------

But if its a prompt on the system tray "You computer is infected with" a
different icon.
try to use an optional 3rd party tool anti-spyware and malware tool (
http://downloads.grisoft.cz/softw/70/filedir/inst/avgas-setup-7.5.1.43.exe )
For Anti-Virus:
proceed here for options
http://www.windowsmarketplace.com search for Anti-Virus.
